Princess Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg today celebrates her fortieth birthday.

She was born in Copenhagen on May 2, 1975 as the youngest child of Princess Benedikte of Denmark and Richard, 6th Prince zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. She has an older sister, Alexandra, and an older brother, Gustav. As she and her siblings were not raised in Denmark, they have no claim to the Danish throne and are not members of the Royal House, as per the decree issued by King Frederik IX at the time of her parents’ marriage.

Nathalie is an accomplished equestrienne, having won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as a member of the Danish dressage team (a team fourth place finish was the result at the 2012 London Olympic Games). She began professional horse riding in 1994 and has competed in several European Championships.

In July 2010, Nathalie gave birth to her first child, son Konstantin, with her then-fiancé, Alexander Johannsmann. They married in a religious ceremony in Bad Berleburg, Germany in June 2011. The couple’s second child, daughter Louisa, was born in January this year.
