In Oslo, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit attended the 25th anniversary seminar of the Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research (CICERO).

The Crown Prince delivered a keynote speech at the opening of the seminar, as did Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Stolberg. “Ever since I was little, nature has helped to define how I see myself and how I am,” the Crown Prince began, going into an illustration of how surfing describes the power and energy of nature.

I believe in all our quest for modernity, we have, at some level, forgotten the elementary: that we are an inextricable part of nature…We define development as per capita income and little else. In a short term perspective…For real development means that people get the better term, and real growth is to find better, more efficient solutions that do not go beyond other groups or the environment,” Haakon said, listing ways that CICERO’s research has contributed to for a balance in development and environmental sustainability.

At the conclusion of his speech, the Crown Prince thanked the CICERO staff for their work, saying, “We need skilled professionals like you at CICERO to see relationships [between nature and humans] in their complex matter.”

CICERO has contributed greatly to the creation of national and international climate policies over the past two decades, providing research and information.
