The Queen of Spain this evening presented the first ‘Woman Awards’ arranged by the media company Grupo Zeta in connection with their Woman Madame Figaro magazine at the Casino de Madrid.

Wearing a strapless black cocktail dress with embroidery and crystals by Felipe Varela (and debuting a new, chic bob haircut!), Queen Letizia presented the award to three women: conductor Inma Shara, the director of the Department of Public Health and Environment at the World Health Organisation Dr. Maria Neira, and actress Salma Hayek. The award winners each have contributed to improving the lives of women, children, cancer patients and victims of terrorism around the world.

Queen Letizia also delivered a speech, in which she focused on the importance of improving the lives and opportunities of women globally: “There are many things that need improvement and change. Rates of illiteracy, underage marriage, female unemployment, wage inequality.”

“It is certainly not the same to be born in Kabul or Sevastopol as it is to be born in Yorkshire or Madrid. But in the end, every girl born anywhere in the world should be able to choose what they want for their lives. Because, and I quote your magazine, it is a luxury to be a woman. Or it should be,” she said, before praising the work done by the three laureates.

Musical performances by Elena Gadel, a singer and former contestant on a Spanish signing show, entertained the guests during the event.
