Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh today hosted a luncheon at Windsor Castle for members of the Order of Merit. Among the attendees were Sir David Attenborough, the Lord Fellowes, Sir Roger Penrose, Baroness Betty Boothroyd and the former Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard.

The Order of Merit was founded in 1902 by King Edward VII to honour “individuals of great achievement in the fields of the arts, learning, literature and science.” There can only be 24 members of the order at any given time, plus a handful of foreign members.
