Kardam, Prince of Turnovo, the eldest son of former Tsar Simeon and Tsarina Margarita, passed away this morning in a Madrid hospital. He was 52.

He died at 11:30am, local time, after suffering a lung infection resulting from his long-standing immobilisation due to injuries sustained in car accident in 2008. “At the bedside of Prince Kardam in his last moments were his parents, wife, and other family members,” a statement from the Bulgarian Royal House read.

Prince Kardam was involved in a serious car accident in August 2008, in which he suffered severe head injuries. He had been in a coma since at least January 2010.

The Prince is survived by his wife, Princess Miriam, their two sons, Princes Boris and Beltrán, his parents and four siblings.
