The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have met with US President Barack Obama during their four day visit to the United States.

A brief meeting and photo opportunity took place in the Oval Office of the White House between the trio, who were also accompanied by Vice President Joe Biden. The President told Prince Charles that “I think it’s fair to say that the American people are quite fond of the Royal Family” and that Americans “like [you] much better than they like their own politicians.” Prince Charles responded with a laugh and the he didn’t believe that last part.

Earlier in the day, Charles and Camilla visited Lincoln’s Cottage, President Abraham Lincoln’s summer home. They were given a tour of the site and were told of the education  and preservation programs that are run to maintain the building.

It was then on to the Armed Forces Retirement Home, which is also located on the same site as the cottage, where the couple met with military veterans and retirees who live at the home, as well as its staff. Prince Charles had a go at ten-pin bowling, knocking down two pins to the cheer of his audience.

Charles and Camilla went their separate ways before their stop at the White House, Charles visiting the Carlos Rosario International Charter School where he sampled an orange marmalade cake. Camilla meanwhile visited the DC Department of Forensic Science to meet with the agencies that deal with sexual assault cases.

In the evening, Prince Charles was presented with the International Conservation Caucus Foundation Teddy Roosevelt Award for Exceptional Leadership in Conservation in a ceremony at the Andrew Mellow Auditorium.

The couple arrived in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday and spent Wednesday visiting the memorials to Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr before getting a guided tour of Mount Vernon, the home of the first American President, George Washington. Prince Charles spoke at an environmental conference, while the Duchess visited the Shakespeare Theatre Company.

Tomorrow they head to Kentucky.
