The Queen of Spain today attended the official Rare Diseases Day event at the Spanish Senate in Madrid.

“A country with strong science is a country that progresses, it moves, which makes its citizens’ lives better. The investment, both public and private, in scientific research is always profitable, always convenient. Today more than ever, we repeat here that research is a prerequisite for progress in all areas,” Queen Letizia said during her speech, after highlighting the impact of research into assisting the three million Spaniards who suffer from what is considered a rare disease (a prevalence of less than five cases per 10,000 people).

During the ceremony, the Queen presented prizes delivered by the Spanish Federation of Rare Diseases (FEDER) to individuals and organisations that support people with rare diseases. Nine prizes are awarded annually by FEDER.

Queen Letizia also met with individuals that have a rare disease and their families. She has been involved with FEDER for several years.
