The parents of Thailand’s former Crown Princess, Srirasmi Suwadee, were arrested last week on charges of lèse-majesté.

Apiruj and Wanthanee Suwadee pled guilty to the charges of defaming the monarchy, lodging a malicious claim and asking officials to file false charges. Their arrest, which took place on Friday, came after a former neighbour of the couple accused them of having her falsely imprisoned for fraud by using their royal connections.

“We plead for mercy from the royal family,” Mr Suwadee said to reporters before he and his wife were denied bail Friday afternoon. The maximum penalty for lèse-majesté is 15 years imprisonment.

A number of the former Crown Princess’s family members have been arrested since November last year in a large-scale corruption ring.

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn announced his divorce from Ms Suwadee, who was his third wife, in December, shortly after he had stripped her family of their royally-provided name.
