The photos, which have never been published before, come from three private photo albums of the former King, and show the Duke and his wife Wallis Simpson along the stages of their relationship. The first album is full of photos from when Edward was still Prince of Wales, the second during his brief period as King, and the third during the couple’s time in exile after they married in 1937.

Those published in Hello! show Edward and Wallis with their pets at Fort Belvedere in Windsor Great Park.

Wallis gave the albums to the gardener of the couple’s Le Moulin de la Tuilerie estate, Henri Gay, after Edward’s death in 1972. “We shared a passion for gardening and nature that cut across the difference in our social backgrounds,” Mr Gay told Hello! of his relationship with the Duke.

Note: A previous version of this article stated that the photograph of the Duke of Windsor in his Garter robes in France has never been published before. However, it appeared in the Philip Ziegler biography of the Duke published in 1990.
