Swedes Attend 2014 Edition of Parliament Opening
The Swedish Royal Family today attended the opening of parliament at the Riksdag in Stockholm.
King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel and Prince Carl Philip, who was accompanied by his fiancé Sofia Hellqvist, first were present at the traditional church service at the Storkyrkan.
From there it was on to the Riksdag by horse-draw carriage, where they were greeted by the Speaker of Parliament, Urban Ahlin. The half-hour long ceremony took place inside the Plenary Hall, where the King declared the 2014/2015 parliamentary session open. In his speech, King Carl Gustaf discussed Sweden’s recent weather which has seen heat waves, floods and forest fires, and also the world’s humanitarian issues and conflicts.
All three ladies adhered to the tradition black and white dress code, which pays homage to the old court dress that used to be worn at the opening of parliament prior to 1974. Queen Silvia and Sofia Hellqvist both wore all black with pops of white in their accessories, while Crown Princess Victoria recycled a white and black Paule Ka dress.
In the evening, the family attended a concert at Stockholm’s Concert Hall.
