Today, Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester celebrated her 68th birthday.

Birgitte Eva Henriksen was born on 20 June, 1946 in Odense, Denmark. Her parents were Asger Preben Knud Wissing Henriksen and his wife, Vivian van Deurs. Although she was born with her father’s surname, she decided to go by her mother’s surname later on. She moved to Cambridge, England and worked at the Danish Embassy in London.

On 8 July 1972, Birgitte married Prince Richard, who would eventually become the Duke of Gloucester, at St. Andrew’s Church in Barnwell, Northhamptonshire. Upon her marriage, she received the title of Princess Richard of Gloucester as the old Duke of Gloucester was still alive.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester have three children: Alexander Windsor, Earl of Ulster (born in 1974), Lady Davina Lewis (née Windsor, born in 1977) and Lady Rose Gilman (née Windsor, born in 1980). They also have six grandchildren: Xan Windsor, Lord Culloden (born in 2007), Lady Cosima Windsor (born in 2010), Senna Lewis (born in 2010), Tāne Lewis (born in 2012), Lyla Gilman (born in 2010) and Rufus Gilman (born in 2012).
