Princess Margriet of the Netherlands Turns 71
Princess Margriet of the Netherlands celebrated her 71st birthday on January 19th. The Princess is a younger sister of former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and a maternal aunt of the present monarch, King King Willem-Alexander.
Princess Margriet was born in Ottawa, Canada during the exile of the Dutch Royal Family following the German occupation of the Kingdom. The Princess was the third daughter of Juliana of the Netherlands and Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld. She has two older sisters – Beatrix and Irene – and a younger sister, Christina.
Princess Margriet met her future husband, Pieter van Vollenhoven at Leiden University in the Netherlands where she was studying at the time. The couple married in January 1967 and together have four sons: Princes Maurits, Bernard, Pieter-Christiaan and Floris.
Princess Margriet is currently 8th in the line of succession to the Dutch throne and a popular member of the Dutch Royal Family.The Princess has quite an active role.
