The Royal Court has announced that Princess Madeleine, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland will give birth to her daughter in New York City instead of Sweden, which was her parent’s wishes. As the little princess will be born in North America, she may not have succession rights based on future arrangements (to be in line for the Swedish Throne, a royal must be raised in Sweden.)

Here is the announcement from the Royal Court:

After careful consideration and in consultation with the King and Queen, Princess Madeleine and Mr. Christopher O’Neill decided that their children will be born in New York. Birth is estimated at the end of February 2014.
Princess Madeleine and Mr. O’Neill kindly request the media to respect their desire for your cooperation during this special and happy time.
Further information will be given at birth.
Svante Lindqvist
Marshal of the Realm

The couple’s engagement was announced on 25 October 2012 and Princess Madeleine married Christopher O’Neill on 8 June 2013 at the Royal Chapel in Stockholm, Sweden.

Personally I think the good princess has just given her nation the middle finger! Perhaps her royalty should be the price she pays for American favoritism.

Not surprised at all. Good choice whether the Swedish people like it or not.

It is her choice of course, but Swedish law is also clear: a prince or princess of the royal house must be raised in Sweden and in the Lutheran faith in order to have succession rights. If any of the two aforementioned conditions are not met, Princess Madeleine’s child will be excluded from the line of succession to the Swedish throne.

Personally, I think it is a dangerous gamble on her part to jeopardize her daughter’s future constitutional position. Furthermore, I dislike how Madeleine is apparently being influenced by Mr O’Neill to give up her resposnibilities as a member of the Swedish Royal House. I assume the King, the Queen and Crown Princess Victoria must be terribly upset, not least because the Swedish royal family is quite small and there is still a chance Carl Philip and his future descendants might also be legally excluded from the succession if the prince insists on marrying Sofia Hellqvist without the King’s and the Swedish government’s approval.
