Japanese Emperor and Empress to Visit India
The Emperor and Empress of Japan are set to begin a six-day official visit to India on Saturday. It will be the first visit to the nation by a Japanese head of state.
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko are making the visit to celebrate last year’s sixtieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and India. They will spend four days in Delhi, meeting with the Indian President and Prime Minister, before heading south to Chennai for two days of cultural activities.
In Delhi, the couple will visit the Jawaharlala Nehru University, and attend a state banquet hosted by President Pranab Mukherjee. On the agenda for Chennai is a visit to Spastics Society of Tamil Nadu, which receives Japanese funding, and attendance at some musical performances at the Kalakshetra.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said of the visit, “{It} will immeasurably expand and strengthen the India-Japan Strategic & Global Partnership.” Similar hopes were expressed by the Japanese Consul-General.
