Crown Princess Mette-Marit in New York

Crown Princess Mette-Marit was in New York last week, focused mainly on the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting 2012 which took place from September 23-25.

The CGI was established in 2005 by President Bill Clinton and gathers a community of global leaders to work on solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. Crown Princess Mette-Marit attended the opening session of the CGI Annual Meeting on September 23rd and surprised us all as she was accompanied by her 15-year old son Marius. Together they listened to the words of, among others, Bill Clinton, Queen Rania of Jordan and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

In the late afternoon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit attended the anniversary service of the Norwegian Seamen’s Church in New York. During the service, Margareth Glad was installed as the new minister for the Seamen’s Church.

During the following day, Crown Princess Mette-Marit attended sessions of the CGI Annual Meeting. In the evening, she was present at a reception hosted by CGI at the Sheraton Hotel.

On September 25th, Crown Princess Mette-Marit attended the CGI session “The Case for Optimism in the 21st Century”, which was moderated by Chelsea Clinton. Afterwards, Crown Princess Mette-Marit co-hosted the ‘Fashion 4 Development Annual First Ladies Luncheon’ at The Pierre Hotel. Fashion 4 Development promotes sustainable fashion worldwide and is directly linked to the UN Secretariat.

In her speech, she mentioned the Norwegian designer Leila Hafzi as an example of a fashion designer who is working actively in this field.

Later during the day, Crown Princess Mette-Marit attended the special remarks session with US President Barack Obama as well as the closing session of the CGI Annual Meeting. In the evening, she was guest at the United Nations ‘Every Woman, Every Child’ dinner, which was hosted by Ban Ki-moon at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The goal of the initiative ‘Every Woman, Every Child’ is to create jobs and improve working conditions in the industry for women in developing countries.

On September 26th, Crown Princess Mette-Marit ended her visit to New York with a breakfast meeting hosted by the global advocacy organisation ‘Women Deliver’, where she spoke about global health challenges, focusing on girls and young women in particular.
