The King of Tonga, George Tupou V, has passed away in a Hong Kong hospital.

The news was confirmed by the Prime Minister of Tonga, Lord Siale’ataonga Tu’ivakano, a short time ago. The King died this afternoon, March 18. According to media reports, the King’s brother, Crown Prince Tupouto’a Lavaka Ata, was by his side.

King George Tupou was diagnosed with cancer last year, and underwent surgery in the US to remove a tumour. It is unknown if his illness was the cause of his death.

George Tupov V became King in 2006, following the death of his father, King Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV. He will be remembered as the King who brought democracy to Tonga, after he relinquished the absolute power held by the Tongan monarch in favour of a democratically elected parliament.

Very sorry to hear the sad news about the Tongan King. We think very highly of the Tongan Military Band who played at the Edinburgh Mililtary Tattoo, they will be devastated.

Whilst he will be missed and condolences are extended to his family and the nation of Tonga. His relinquishing of his constitutional power was because of the political pressure upon him to allow system of governance to become more democratic. He had no choice at the time, the peoples democratic movement had a lot of influence when he ascended the thrown. He would have been extremely unpopular among Tongan people if he didn’t care to make democratic change.

However to clarify on the above comment, the situation at hand is very sad and such a shock also. Its sad too as I feel he didn’t have enough time as King to really stamp his influence on the country.
