On Christmas Eve, His Majesty The King delivered his annual televised Christmas address from the Zarzuela Palace. The traditional message on this, the 36th year of His Majesty’s reign, began with the King wishing everyone best wishes for peace and happiness.

The main themes of this year’s Christmas message were the current economic crisis in Spain, at the end of a difficult year for both the Royal Family and Spain. The King called for “exemplary” and “equal justice for all”, many have interpreted this as a reference to the scandal surrounding his son in law, The Duke of Palma de Mallorca.

His Majesty also expressed a “heartfelt remembrance for the victims of terrorism” and a reference to the recent change of government following November’s general election. The King also thanked the Spanish people for their interest in the King’s health and then paid tribute to his son and heir, the Prince of Asturias.
