Danish Crown Princely Couple in the USA, Day One
Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary spent their first day in the United States yesterday, the couple however had seperate agendas.
The Crown Prince was in Boston, Massachusetts, where he opened the ‘Danish Connected Care’ portion of the Connected Health Syposium. The aim of the symposium is for various leading Danish healthcare companies to provide knowledge and their designs in relation to digital healthcare. Prince Frederik gave a keynote speech during the event, held at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. From there, the Prince headed over to one of his alma matars, Harvard University, where he visited the John F Kennedy School of Government and met with Danish students and various professors. Prince Frederik attended Harvard between 1992 and 1993, studying political science.
Meanwhile, Crown Princess Mary was in New York City. Her first event for the day was a meeting with deputy executives of the United Nations Population Fund, of which the Princess was made a patron in June 2010. She met with Mari Simone, Purnima Mane and Safiye Cagar. Following this was a visit to Harlem, where Princess Mary paid a visit to a non-profit organisation, Harlem Children’s Zone, which works to strengthen the community by creating a safe environment for the children in the area. During the visit to a Harlem school, the Princess spoke with students and teachers, before heading up to the school’s rooftop garden, where she was learnt about the vegetables they grow and the school’s healthy eating plans.
In the evening, Crown Princess Mary was present with the heads of state of her fellow Scandinavian nations – the Kings and Queens of Norway and Sweden and the President of Finland – for the opening of an exhibition at Scandinavia House. The exhibition, Luminous Modernism, is being held to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the America-Scandinavia Foundation. More about the exhibition and joint events will follow over the course of the weekend.
