14th Wedding Anniversary of The Duke & Duchess of Palma de Mallorca
On October 4th, 1997 Her Royal Highness The Infanta Cristina of Spain married Basque sportsman Iñaki Urdangarín Liebaert in Barcelona.
The couple’s engagement was announced on May 3rd, 1997 at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid. The King confered the title of Duchess of Palma de Mallorca for life on Infanta Cristina. Her future husband would therefore be styled, ‘His Excellency Don Iñaki, Duke of Palma de Mallorca’.
The wedding mass took place at Barcelona’s magnificent Gothic Cathedral of Santa Eulalia. Thousands of cheering well wishers lined the streets to greet Infanta Cristina and the Royal Family as they arrived at the Cathedral. Royalty from all over the world and foreign dignitaries had already assembled inside the medieval Cathedral.
Infanta Cristina wore the Platinum and Diamond Floral Tiara made by the esteemed French jewellery company, Mellerio. The tiara was completed with another Borbón heirloom – the wedding veil of Queen Maria Cristina of Austria. Her dress was designed by Spanish designer Lorenzo Caprile. It was made of Valencian silk, had full length sleeves and a three meter long train. Infanta Cristina arrived outside the Cathedral in a Rolls Royce with her father, King Juan Carlos I.
Royal guests included the entire Spanish Royal Family, the Kings and Queens of Norway and Sweden, Queen Noor of Jordan, the Grand Duke and Duchess of Luxembourg, Prince Edward of the United Kingdom, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Prince Philippe of Belgium, and Prince Rainier III and Prince Albert of Monaco.
The wedding banquet was held at the Palau Reial de Pedralbes (Royal Palace) in Barcelona.
