As per tradition, the Swedish Royal Family – minus Princess Madeleine – were present at the ceremony for the Nobel Prizes in Literature, Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Economic Sciences and Chemistry with King Carl Gustav presenting the awards. Earlier in the day in Norway, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Liu Xiabo for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China. He was not present to collect his award as he was imprisoned last year.

Between 1901 and 2010, the Nobel Prizes and the Prize in Economic Sciences have been awarded 543 times. There have been a few years in which the Nobel Prize was not awarded, particularly during World Wars I and II.

The award cermony is held in the afternoon and is followed by the Nobel banquet. Since 1902, the King of Sweden has presented all the prizes, except the Peace Prize, in Stockholm.
