President Opens Defence Show

February 22, 2009 – UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed opened the ninth International Defence Exhibition and Conference Idex 2009. Sheikh Khalifa was joined by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President of the UAE. Attending the grand opening ceremony were also Their Highnesses Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates, Crown Princes and Deputies of Rulers.

The launch event featured a fly-by performed by Emirati F-16 fighter jets, armoured personnel carriers and tanks flying the UAE flag.

Sheikh Khalifa said yesterday the Emirates was determined to acquire an “advanced deterrent defence” and promised further modernisation of the armed forces.
He added: “The military strategy of the UAE and its plans for building an integrated, strong defence system are based on determination to protect its higher interests and defend the nation.”

IDEX 2009 is the largest exhibition in the Gulf region this year, beating predictions of a business slowdown in the industry and the region’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sectors. Forty-eight nations are being represented at Idex 2009, which is expected to draw more than 40,000 trade visitors. The exhibition features land, sea and air vehicles and systems, radar, electronic warfare and electro-optic systems, weapons and ordnance, homeland and internal security, simulation and training, logistics, medical and survival systems and personal equipment.
