TRH the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have kicked off their 9-day tour of Eastern Europe. Touching down in icy Poland, the royal couple were greeted by the British Ambassador before being whisked off to meet the President Kaczynski and First Lady.

The Duchess was on typical elegant form in a lovely berry-pink coat and silk paisley dress by her trusted designer, Anna Valentine. HRH accompanied the look with a chic scarf, grungy boots and a few strands of pearls, though jewelies will be disappointed in the lack of brooch.

TRH then paid their respects to Father Jerzy Popieluszko, a modern day Polish martyr. Father Jerzy was famous for his passionate sermons against the then communist government. In 1984, at only 37 years old, he was kidnapped from his home, brutally tortured and thrown into a river. His death and funeral sparked outrage amongst Poland and over 500,000 thousand Poles took to the streets. Five years after his death, the Iron Curtain would finally collapse. Prince Charles laid a wreath at the grave site which is kept under a 24-hour vigil by volunteers.

The Royal couple met with the Prime Minister and his wife before having a quick meeting with the Premiere. The President and First Lady will be hosting a glittering affair at the Presidential Palace in honour of the Royal guests this afternoon.

TRH’s visit will take them to Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. The Royal tour is meant to strengthen the military and trade links between the UK and the Republics. Update coming soon…

Update, the promised glittering affair, isn’t so. The Prince of Wales is dressed in a regular evening suit and the Duchess of Cornwall has recycled her dress from the reception at the White House and paired it with her new diamond and pearl choker. Here’s hoping for a bit more bedazzle on this tour…
