Earlier this month, Queen Fabiola of the Belgians gave up her patronage of the the ‘Damiaanactie’ as her health prevents her from getting actually involved with the cause. The queen was involved with the Damiaanactie since 1965. On Monday the palace announced that Princess Astrid will be taking over the patronage from her aunt, and that the princess will become the charity’s new honorairy chairwoman.

The upcoming weekend the annual campaign for the Damiaanactie will start off. The organisers of the event however fear that people prefer to donate money to Haiti instead of the Damiaanactie. Secretary General Rigo Peeters says: ‘Our patients are not crushed under the rabble, they do have medical care and they are not homeless. However, they do need life saving medicine’.
